Chapter 5. Facebook groups

A. The power of social media groups

1. Social media uses groups to build networks and involve people in a venture or cause.

2. You can create groups to promote and link your Facebook page and Wildfire website.

3. You can use groups to have friends advocate for your Facebook page or Wildfire website.

4. You can create a group of people that can comment on your page.

5. A group can promote your Facebook page more than you can by yourself.

6. Facebook describes groups this way: “Groups allow people to come together around a common cause, issue, or activity to organize, express objectives, discuss issues, post photos, and share related content.”

7. The main goal for a group is to get people excited about your Wildfire website and Facebook page and promote their use.

B. Create a Facebook group

1. We are only going to deal with Facebook groups now. You can also create groups with other social media.

2. Here is an example of a Facebook group:

3. First, define the purpose of your group.

a) Are you trying to get people excited about your Wildfire website and Facebook page?

b) Are you looking for a group of experts to give you advice on your Wildfire website or Facebook page?

c) The purpose of your group will guide you in selecting your privacy settings.

4. Make sure you are Facebook friends with everyone that you want to be in your group.

5. At the top right side of your Facebook home screen, click on the button Create.

a) A drop-down box will display options for what to create.

b) Click on the option Group.

c) A pop-up box enables you to provide details for the group.

d) Write a name in the blank space under Name your group. (This could be the same as your Facebook page.)

e) Keep in mind the purpose of your group and Add some people.

f) Select the privacy setting.

(1) The purpose of your group will guide you in selecting your privacy settings.

(2) If it is a group of friends giving you advice for your Facebook page or Wildfire website, then it should be a Closed Group or a Secret Group.

(3) If the group is for the promotion of your website, it should be a Public Group.

g) When you are finished, click on the button Create.
