Chapter 6. Create and edit a website page with an image gallery

A. Introduction

1. A gallery is a special type of page in the Wildfire system. It is intended to give maximum display area to a collection of images.

2. What does a website visitor see on a gallery page?

The website page contains brief text at the top and displays thumbnails in varying sizes of the images in the gallery.

a) Click on a thumbnail to enter the full-image gallery viewer.

b) Arrows to the left and right of the image allow the viewer to move from one image to another within the gallery.

3. Add gallery pages to your website to group photos and images by subject or theme.

4. Much of the process of creating a gallery is the same as creating a page. Review the process of creating a page in Unit 02, Chapter 3, Section B.

5. Text above a gallery should be enough to inform the website visitor about the subject of the images without taking up too much of the image viewing area on the page. Text may also be added below a gallery.

B. Start a new gallery page

1. At the Overview screen, click the Add new dropdown menu, then click on the option Gallery.

C. Add text content

1. Write a page title in each Navigation Language.

2. A gallery page gives the option of having text above and/or below the gallery itself.

2. Click on one of the links titled Text above or Text below. (You may use both.)

a) The standard text editing box appears. You are already familiar with its use.

3. Write a small amount of text in each Navigation Language to introduce the gallery and explain how to use the viewer.

D. Select images

1. The section titled Images is between the two links for Text above and Text below.

a) Click +Add files at the bottom left of the gray frame.

b) A file browser window opens showing your computer’s file system.

(Depending on your computer settings, you may see your files in either list mode or icon mode.)

117. Select gallery images from files on your computer

c) Choose one or more files (allowed file types are .png, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg). A maximum of 20 image files is recommended.

d) Click on the button Open.

e) Your files are now listed inside the gray frame in the Images section.

f) Click on the link Start upload.

g) As files are successfully uploaded, the dash inside a red circle changes to a checkmark inside a green circle.

h) Alternate methods of selecting image files are covered in Chapter 9.

2. Once image files are uploaded, they are shown in a chart, with a thumbnail image next to the original filename.

a) In the field called Alternate text, write a brief description of each image in the Publication Language. This serves as a caption for the image in the full-image gallery viewer.

b) To change the order of the images:

(1) Move the mouse cursor over the four-pointed arrow to the left of the thumbnail image.

(2) Click and hold.

(3) Drag the arrow up or down to the desired position.

(4) Release the click.

c) If needed, the image can be rotated clockwise 90˚.

(1) Click on the circular arrow at the upper left of the thumbnail image.

d) You can remove an image from the gallery by clicking on the button Remove to the right.

E. Save or discard your work

1. To make the page immediately visible, click on the button Save and publish at bottom left.

2. To save the page but not make it visible, click on the button Save as draft at bottom left.

3. To exit without saving your work, click on the button Cancel at bottom left.

a) A pop-up screen asks you to confirm if you want to stay on the page or leave the page without saving your work. Click on the button that states your choice.

4. When you save your work, you will exit the Add new Gallery editing screen and see a preview of the public version of the page.

5. When you cancel your work, you will exit the Add new Gallery editing screen and return to the Overview screen.
