Chapter 11. Files on websites

A. Viewable website content

1. The website visitor sees the content that you create directly in your website (page text, menu, etc.).

2. The website visitor also sees the content that you or someone else creates and you put on your website. This content is in the files that you upload and place on your website.

3. The website visitor sees the content that you link to. This is material that you did not make and is not on your website; it is on someone else’s website or social media page.

B. Allowable file types and sizes

1. Text files:

a) Formats: .txt, .pdf, .otf, .odt, .odp, .ods

b) File size: Maximum 5MB for viewing .pdf files in online viewer

c) When creating .pdf files, choose “Save for web” to minimize file size.

2. Audio files:

a) Formats: .wav, .mp3

b) File size: As small as possible while retaining good listening clarity.

3. Video files:

a) Formats: .mp4, .3gg, .avi, .mpeg, .mpg, .m4v, .wmv, .mov, .3gp, .flv, .rm, .ram, .swf, .dat

b) File size: As small as possible while retaining good viewing resolution.

4. Image files:

a) Formats: .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .ico

b) File size: Smaller is better for uploading. The Wildfire system adjusts the image dimensions depending on where it is used on the website.

5. Other files:

a) Fonts: .ttf, .woff

b) Apps: .apk, .epub, .jar, .mobi, .mybible, .ipa, .ipsw

c) Executable files: .exe, .xsm, .dmg, .jad, .jar, .deb

d) Presentations: .ppt, .pptx, .ppsx, .pps

e) Back-up files: .fb, .fb2, .zip

f) Misc.: .iso
